What to Expect

What a camp day looks like

Five hours, drop-off to pick-up: three build blocks, two proper breaks outside, and something to show at the end of every day.

  1. 9:00Drop-offDoors open, names on badges, and everyone settles into their group for the week.
  2. 9:15Web buildHTML and CSS. Each child works on their own website, building a little more of it every morning.
  3. 10:30Break outsideSnack and a proper run around in the yard. Nobody sits at a laptop for five hours.
  4. 11:00Games & inventionsThe rotating block: MakeCode Arcade games some days, Micro:bit builds on others.
  5. 12:15Lunch & yard gamesPacked lunches together, then straight back outside for football and games.
  6. 13:00Python labTyped code and real output: short Python programs and Turtle graphics animations.
  7. 13:40Show and tellEveryone presents what they made to the room. Standing up and explaining it is half the skill.
  8. 14:00Pick-upCollected from the same door, with the day's work saved and ready for tomorrow.

Projects

What they'll build

Four things run through the week, and every child finishes all four. Nobody goes home with a half-built idea.

HTML & CSS

A website that's entirely theirs

Starting from an empty file, every child builds a real website: their own layout, colours, images and words. At the end of the week it goes up on the big screen and they present it to the class.

MakeCode Arcade

Arcade games they can actually play

They draw the sprites, write the rules and build the levels, then plug in the 8BitDo controllers and take turns playing each other's games.

Micro:bit

Code that leaves the screen

Wearable step counters they build and then test on themselves, plus sustainability projects like a humidity and temperature tracker for the classroom.

Python

Their first real programming language

The step up from blocks to typing. Short Python programs, then Turtle graphics for the spirals, patterns and animations they design themselves.

Everything they make is emailed to you

We save each child's work as the week goes on and send it to you once camp finishes: the website, the games and the Python animations. You get to open them at home and have your child explain how they made them.

Where it runs

St Andrew's College Junior School, Booterstown Ave, Blackrock. Open to children from any school: you don't need to be a St Andrew's pupil to come.

The week

Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 2:00pm. Drop-off and pick-up are at the same door, so you're never hunting for the right entrance.

Groups & mentors

Ages 7–14, split into small groups by age and experience, each with its own mentor. Total beginners and returning coders are both catered for.

Equipment

We bring all of it: a laptop each, Micro:bits, 8BitDo controllers and every material the week needs. Nothing to buy, nothing to install at home.

What to bring

A packed lunch, a snack for the morning break, a water bottle and a coat for outside. No laptop needed.

Our mentors

Garda vetted, Children First trained and used to this age group, and it's the same faces in the room all week.

FAQ

Camp questions

What parents ask us most before they book.

Does my child have to attend St Andrew's?+
No. The camp runs at St Andrew's College Junior School in Booterstown, but it is open to every child in the 7–14 age range, whatever school they go to during the year.
Does my child need any coding experience?+
None. Groups are split by age and experience, so a complete beginner and a child who has been coding for two years are both working on something pitched at them.
Do they need to bring a laptop?+
No. We provide a laptop for every child, along with the Micro:bits, controllers and all materials. All your child brings is a packed lunch, a snack and a water bottle.
Will they be in front of a screen for five hours?+
No. There is a morning break outside, lunch and yard games in the middle of the day, and the Micro:bit projects are wearable: the step counter only works if they get up and move.
What about lunch?+
Children bring their own packed lunch and a morning snack. Tell us about any allergies when you book and we'll plan the room around them.
Do I get to see what my child made?+
Yes. We save every child's projects during the week and email them to you after camp: the website, the games and the Python animations, so you can open them at home and have your child walk you through it.
Is my neurodiverse child supported at camp?+
Yes. We run a dedicated programme for neurodiverse learners during term time, and the same approach carries into camp: small groups, clear step-by-step instructions and a calm, structured room. Let us know what works for your child when you book.
When will the dates and price be announced?+
We are finalising the Summer 2027 week with the school now. Send us your child's name and age and we'll email you the dates, the price and the booking link as soon as they go live.
